"In the world of Kardashians, be a Helena Bonham Carter." As I approached my 30s, I realised that being the black sheep and standing out from the crowd is far more fun than blending in! So many of us are put into a small beige box we completely do not fit in, just to make society accept us. I've always loved reading. It was an escape, a way to forget how broken the world is. Believe it or not, reading a book of absolute horrors is great at taking your mind off your problems! I wanted to combine the two: the need to stop attempting to fit in and my love of books. And so one chilly winter night, the idea of Haunted Bookshop was born. On February 29th (Leap Year, I know!!), the business was registered. Throughout the summer of 2024, I worked incredibly hard to get the idea off the ground, and with the help of my brilliant friends and a group of volunteers (witches!), the shop opened just in time for Halloween. We're now based in the lively Stokes Croft in Bristol and are surrounded by some wonderful independent shops, restaurants and cafes. Our stock includes books by local authors, scented candles, smudge sticks, tarot cards, herbs, skincare and more. The shop has already become one of Bristol's coolest haunts and the community around it is growing bigger by the day. From the bottom of my little black heart, thank you to every single one of you who's helped, volunteered, purchased books or just popped in to say hello! You make it worth every sleepless stressful night! The space will be available to hire for workshops, spiritual events, book presentations and book clubs in January.
